Everything West Jefferson specific moved out to a separate repo
(pxe-site-wj): NTLARS/UDC/heat-treat backups keyed by WJ machine numbers,
CMM and Wax/Trace bay lists, WJ OpenText profiles, site-config.json, the
WJ preinstall list, and the WJ shopfloor PC types (Collections,
NoCollections, Common, Keyence, CMM, Genspect, HeatTreat, Wax/Trace,
Display, PartMarker) with GE-Enforce, machine numbers and the desktop
layout. The part-marker bench tools moved to their own repo. Dead
scripts removed: build-proxmox-iso, deploy-bios, sync_hardware_models,
mirror-from-gold, pull-bios, startnet-template.cmd.
Shopfloor is one generic type, gea-shopfloor-standard, with today's
timing:
- PPKG at first logon (unattend Order 10, unchanged).
- Install-AppList.ps1 runs C:\PreInstall\preinstall.json during setup.
- A new SYSTEM task, GE Shopfloor Post-PPKG, runs postppkg.json once
after the post-PPKG reboot. It also clears AutoLogonCount after the
ShopFloor handover (the Users-level monitor can be denied that HKLM
write) and removes the Intune Sync task when done.
- Both lists ship empty. A site adds entries and installers.
- WinPE choice 3 goes straight to the PPKG menu. Staging, fetch and heal
carry only the generic payload. The webapp's shopfloor sub-menu editor
is gone, and the imaging tiles name the new stages.
- The playbook deploys the empty lists only if missing. It now deploys
the PowerShell 7 MSI the shopfloor unattend installs, which it never
did before.
Blancco site settings move into the webapp (Updates > Blancco releases):
business location, licensing Wi-Fi SSID and password. They are rendered
into the served preferences.xml and applied to every staged release, and
are seeded from site-vars (site_name, blancco_wifi_ssid,
blancco_wifi_password) only while none exist. The repo XML carries no
site values; the plaintext Wi-Fi password is gone from it.
New site_name and site_timezone settings: report and evidence-pack site
name, server clock and webapp time zone. No more West Jefferson defaults
in webapp/config.py or the dashboard title. Sync-BPRT.ps1 gets the
server address filled in at download instead of WJ's GE address.
USB on Windows:
- scripts/Build-PxeUsb.ps1 runs the same checks as build-usb.sh. It
writes one FAT32 CIDATA partition (ISO files plus patched grub.cfg plus
payload) with diskpart and reads every file back by SHA-256.
- Tested with Windows PowerShell 5.1 in the win11 VM, and the layout
installs and first-boots in the pxetest VM.
- scripts/stage-usb-share.sh stages the build folder on a share.
- site-content/ is optional for both builders.
KB docs/kb/How_To_Deploy_PXE_Server_New_Site.html: new-site deployment,
Windows only, with a site-vars.yml guide.
Checks: webapp tests pass (5 suites); the unattend lint and playbook
syntax checks pass; every .ps1 parses; there are no WJ hosts, IPs, names
or PC types in playbook/, webapp/, scripts/ or autoinstall/.
Sites no longer need either MAC in site-vars.
pxe_nic_mac empty: before anything changes, the playbook runs
pxe-pick-nic --auto. It takes the one wired port with a link, accepts it
only if pxe-nic-check calls it isolated (no LLDP/CDP/802.1X, no other
DHCP server, at most 10 hosts heard in 65 s), and pins it. The choice is
saved in /etc/pxe-server/nic-pick.conf and never re-guessed at boot.
When it cannot tell (no link, two links, not isolated) nothing changes,
and the console banner says why and to run sudo pxe-pick-nic: pull the
imaging cable and plug it back in, and the port that blinked is the
imaging one. Both helpers are installed before the pick, so that works
after a refused first boot. The site's corp domains and allowed
switches are passed to the check.
corp_nic_mac empty: every other wired port (en*, eth*) is a catch-all
DHCP client, so GE can be plugged in at install or later.
- dnsmasq stays pinned with interface=pxe0. A new check refuses any
dhcp-range outside the imaging subnet, and proxy ranges.
- The catch-all ports ignore offers from 172.16.9.1.
- UFW allows SSH and 9009 by source on any interface, and keeps those
rules when the old any-interface rules are removed.
- pxe_nic_name must not look like en*/eth* in this mode.
pxe-netplan-apply.sh takes 3 or 5 args. Without a pinned GE NIC it:
- renames stray names (the old pxe0 after a re-pick, a leftover corp0)
to enx<mac>, so the catch-all takes them, and restores them on revert;
- checks that every NIC that had a DHCP address before has one after,
tracked by MAC.
With both MACs set (the WJ server), netplan, the dnsmasq pin and UFW
render byte-for-byte as before.
Tested in the pxetest VMs:
- Fresh install with no MACs and the GE link down: the imaging port was
picked and pinned as pxe0 with 172.16.9.1, and dnsmasq bound DHCP to
pxe0 only. GE plugged in afterwards got a lease, SSH worked, and the
guard reported pxe0 isolated.
- --auto refuses with two links.
- The interactive pick works by pulling and replugging the link.
- A 3-arg re-apply is UNCHANGED.
Unit tests (fake sysfs) cover the re-pick and pinned-to-catch-all renames.
A freshly installed server could not build standard or engineer: about
8 GB they install from existed only on the running server.
scripts/capture-site-content.sh pulls it over SSH into the gitignored
payload:
- _shared/Applications/extra (Office, Adobe, OpenText, Java, fonts, Wi-Fi,
Zscaler), without pxe-status/ (the playbook deploys that);
- each image's own Deploy/Applications files and folders (GE CA
certificates, the Engineering Layer payload), without the repo-managed
Install-EngineeringLayer.ps1 and without stale BPRT copies;
- the links images keep there, as links.txt;
- fresh bios-staging (*.exe plus models.txt, which the Dell update
rewrites), boot.wim, and the known Blancco file set.
It dry-runs by default, compares by checksum (a Blancco config.img had the
same size and time as the stale copy), writes SHA256SUMS, and refuses what
FAT32 cannot hold: files of 4 GiB or more, Windows-illegal names, and
case-only name clashes.
build-usb.sh copies site-content/ unsplit and refuses to build without it
(unless --skip-site-content), or when SHA256SUMS is missing or does not
cover every file. The playbook checks SHA256SUMS, then merges the content
into winpeapps and recreates the links. It only links to folders that
exist, so it never creates an empty _shared BPRT, which would stop the
first MCL import from seeding it. Link lines are validated before anything
is copied.
pull-bios.sh is gone. It read a path the server no longer uses, with a
hard-coded password.
Engineer builds left the employee without "Configure my Engineering
Layer". First logon ran C:\Deploy\Applications\extra_engineering\
Install-EngineeringLayer.ps1, and the script itself lived in C:\Deploy:
std/eng have no autologon, so a PC that rebooted before the employee
signed in had lost C:\Deploy to the orchestrator's DeleteDeployDir task,
and nothing installed, silently.
- engineer unattend, specialize Order 37 (free slot): run the script with
-StageOnly, copying the payload and the script to C:\PreInstall\engineering
while C:\Deploy exists (Path 119 chars)
- first logon Order 11: run it from C:\PreInstall\engineering, falling back
to C:\Deploy if staging did not happen
- the script (now in the repo, playbook/engineering/; it lived only on the
server): after the install, restore the Public desktop icon if it is
missing and the PC is not configured yet (no C:\TMP\DUU_Complete.log), and
register Active Setup so each later user gets the icon on their own
desktop when the Public one is gone. v3.1 puts the icon on the Public
desktop; clicking it (configure, from GE's V: share) deletes it for all
- playbook deploys the script to gea-engineer extra_engineering; the 650 MB
payload stays site content (documented in SITE-CUSTOMIZATION.md)
Tested in the win11 VM with the exact unattend strings and a stand-in
installer that skips the icon: specialize staged payload and script;
C:\Deploy deleted; first logon installed from the staged copy, restored the
icon and registered Active Setup. The per-user step as a new user: icon on
their desktop when the PC is unconfigured and the Public icon is gone; none
when configured or when the Public icon is there. Lint clean. Not deployed:
unattends go out only through scripts/deploy-unattend.sh.
- Deploy shopfloor-setup with rsync instead of the copy module: the
~4 GB tree took about 4 minutes on every re-run because copy checksums
each file. rsync transfers only changes; changed only when it did.
- iPXE drops a trailing space, so 'Machine number:' ran into the typed
digits. The space now comes from a hex 20 setting.
- tests/vm: pxetest-xp is a permanent client (SeaBIOS, qemu32 32-bit CPU,
rtl8139, 1 GiB, IDE disk) for the i686 Clonezilla path; start.sh xp.
Only one client may run at a time across all three.
Boot menu: "Clonezilla: back up this PC" and "restore this PC" ask for the
machine number and boot Clonezilla (64-bit with Debian shim, or 32-bit
i686 by cpuid) with ocs_repository=smb3://clonezilla:<pw>@server/clonezilla/,
ocs_prerun fetching clonezilla-scripts/pxe-cz.sh and ocs_live_run running
it. The script validates the machine number, saves
<machine>-<YYYY-MM-DD-HHMM> (server time), writes pxe-meta.txt, runs
ocs-chkimg, and restores only that machine's images with -k1 -r after a
typed YES. The old entry is "Clonezilla: manual".
Playbook: clonezilla Samba user for the [clonezilla] share only, password
from clonezilla_smb_password (validated, filled into the menu
placeholder), scripts installed to the web root.
Webapp: Clonezilla backups page lists image folders and zips grouped by
machine number with serial/model/version/check, serial mismatch flag,
delete, move to another machine, streamed tar download, disk space bar
and an explicit keep-last-N retention with preview. Tests and a VM test
plan added.
Current Clonezilla is amd64-only. The menu now checks the CPU with iPXE's
cpuid --ext 29 (long mode): 64-bit CPUs get the current release (through
Debian's shim under Secure Boot), 32-bit-only CPUs (Pentium 4 without
EM64T, Pentium M, early Atom) get Clonezilla 3.2.0-5 i686, the last
32-bit release, from clonezilla-i686/. Without a cpuid command the 32-bit
build is used, which also runs on 64-bit CPUs; UEFI always gets the
64-bit build. A 'Clonezilla Live 32-bit' item forces it.
prepare-boot-tools.sh downloads it, the playbook deploys it.
Clonezilla Live runs a Debian-signed kernel whose modules (usb-storage,
uas, exfat) are signed by the same build key, so the menu now starts it
through Debian's Microsoft-signed shim with the iPXE shim command, the
same way Blancco uses Ubuntu's. prepare-boot-tools.sh extracts that shim
from the Clonezilla release (EFI/boot/bootx64.efi -> clonezilla/
shimx64.efi) and warns when the shim is not Microsoft-signed or the
kernel not Debian-signed.
Memtest86+ is unsigned and needed Secure Boot off; memory tests now use
the Dell built-in diagnostics (F12 at power-on, Diagnostics), noted in
the menu. The playbook removes the old memtest web dir. Nothing on the
menu needs Secure Boot off any more; the 'disable Secure Boot' screen
remains only as the fallback when a signed path fails.
H1 corp_admin_cidrs (UFW 22/9009 on the corp NIC from these only; refuses
when it would lock out the current SSH client) and corp_ssh_password_auth
(sshd drop-in, passwords only from the imaging subnet). Defaults keep the
current behaviour and print a loud warning.
H2 pxe-netplan-apply.sh: pre-flight refusal (pxe-MAC NIC holds the default
route, a DHCP lease or the route to an SSH client), run from the USB
before anything changes; post-apply checks (names, imaging IPv4, corp
IPv4 back within 30 s, SSH route) and a 120 s systemd-run auto-revert.
H3 restore() puts the previous NIC names back (two-phase rename via
temporary names, so swaps work) before generate + apply.
H4 a failed rename is fatal (restore + exit 1); the play drops the old
any-interface UFW rules only after verifying both NICs and their
per-interface SSH rules.
H5 first-boot checks the playbook exit code, retries at next boot (max 5),
writes /var/lib/pxe-firstboot.failed and /etc/issue + /etc/motd banners.
M1 build-usb.sh verifies iPXE files against the playbook pins, every wheel
against its own package's hashes, drops the unpinned pip fallback,
requires --site-vars or --no-site-vars.
M2 webapp restarts when the code, wheels or unit changed.
M3 ignore-carrier on the imaging NIC; ip_nonlocal_bind kept for the
apache/networkd boot race.
M4 menu suffix must match blancco_kver; missing kernel with no earlier
build is fatal; a live menu with the staged Blancco test entry is not
overwritten.
M5 build-proxmox-iso.sh is unsupported (hard exit); use build-usb --image.
M6 deploy-unattend.sh: password via SSHPASS env and sudo stdin only,
%q-quoted remote args, sha256 check of the live file; lint-unattend.py
reads PXE_SERVER/PXE_USER/PXE_PASS and uses sshpass -e.
M7 the playbook lints the unattend files before the force: yes copies
(lint-unattend.py ships on CIDATA as scripts/); pre-commit ACMR.
M8 Blancco initramfs build: no ignore_errors, pipefail, trap cleanup.
Also: Send-ImagingStage.ps1 deploy, carrier hook install tasks
(pxe-nic-carrier, networkd-dispatcher), L1 imaging-active hold
(allow_disruptive) and no iPXE downgrade below an Updates-page install,
L2 iso-volid, L3 kver pin read from the playbook, L4 cp -rL, L5 refuse
>= 4 GiB WinPE files, L6 PIP_DIR wipe guard, L7 per-package wheel hashes,
no online fallback, L8 check-updates.py (apt_pkg/cached compare, all
components, exit 2 on no debs / bad answers).
- webapp/requirements.txt pins all eight wheels with sha256, at the fixed
releases (lxml 6.1.3 for GHSA-vfmq-68hx-4jfw / PYSEC-2026-87, werkzeug
3.1.9 for GHSA-g6x2-hccm-hh4m).
- download-packages.sh fetches exactly that set for Python 3.12 / x86_64
into an emptied folder; PIP_DIR is honoured inside the container (own
mount), files are handed back to the calling user, USE_DOCKER=1 forces
the container on a noble host, an unknown package name now prints apt's
error instead of failing silently, and linux-modules-extra-7.0.* is gone
(it does not exist; 7.0 ships those modules in linux-modules).
- Playbook: the wheel installer refuses any wheel whose sha256 is not
pinned, needs exactly one wheel per pin, and removes an older installed
version by its RECORD first. The webapp copy is a full rsync every run
(was cp with creates: app.py, which never updated an install).
- scripts/check-updates.py: offline debs against noble security/updates
and the pins against PyPI + osv.dev; exit 1 when something needs
updating. Run it before building a USB.
Tested: installer in a Python 3.12 venv (clean install, upgrade over lxml
6.0.4 + werkzeug 3.1.8 leaves no old dist-info, re-run is a no-op, a stray
wheel is refused); check-updates.py flags the April bundle (94 security
updates) and passes the pins.
Every server has an imaging NIC (static, the only one that serves
DHCP/TFTP/HTTP boot/SMB) and a GE corporate NIC (DHCP client, SSH and the
webapp on 9009). The playbook guessed the PXE NIC and the installer put
172.16.9.1/24 on every en* NIC, so a two-NIC box could answer on the GE
network.
- New per-site vars pxe_nic_mac / corp_nic_mac (required, from
playbook/site-vars.yml or -e; template site-vars.example.yml), stable
names pxe_nic_name / corp_nic_name (default pxe0 / corp0, overridable),
pxe_server_ip, pxe_subnet, DHCP range. pxe_imaging_mac / pxe_ge_mac are
derived from them. The play stops before touching anything if a MAC is
unset, malformed, duplicated or not on the box (lists the box's NICs).
- Heuristic NIC detection and the single-NIC netplan task replaced by a
two-NIC netplan template (match macaddress + set-name), installed by
pxe-netplan-apply.sh: validate in a scratch root, back up, generate,
rename, apply, restore the previous config on any failure. cloud-init
network config disabled so it cannot rewrite it.
- dnsmasq: /etc/dnsmasq.d/pxe-nic-only.conf from the vars (interface=,
except-interface=, no-dhcp-interface=); dnsmasq.conf IP/range from vars.
- UFW per interface: imaging NIC 22, 67/udp, 69/udp, 80, 4433, 445, 139,
137/udp, 138/udp, 9009; GE NIC 22 and 9009 only. Old any-interface rules
and the stale 9011 rule removed after the new ones are in.
- sysctl drop-in: IPv4/IPv6 forwarding off; ip_nonlocal_bind so Apache
can bind the imaging IP before the address is up.
- Samba [global]: interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 <imaging NIC>, bind interfaces
only. Apache 80 and 4433 on the imaging IP only; 9009 stays on all (TODO:
the webapp has no auth).
- autoinstall: DHCP only on en*, no static 172.16.9.1; apt geoip off and
offline-install fallback now that the corp NIC may have a lease.
- Blancco UEFI/Secure Boot: blancco_kver (7.0.0-34-generic) drives the
kernel, initramfs and modules builds instead of the running kernel;
outputs vmlinuz-ubuntu-70, kexec-initrd-70.img, kmod-<kver>.tar.gz as the
menu and blancco-init.sh expect; creates: guards keyed on the full kver.
Ubuntu's shimx64.efi.signed published as blancco/shimx64.efi.
download-packages.sh adds shim-signed, linux-generic-hwe-24.04 and the
pinned linux-image/modules/modules-extra for BLANCCO_KVER.
Rendered with the live MACs and names, netplan generate output is
identical to the live config; pxe-nic-only.conf and the Samba binding
match live directive for directive.
A PC whose imaging failed and is re-imaged gets the same IP, and the
server still held state from the dead run, so net use failed (System
error 53). The April fix (18537ac) did not cover it:
- The dnsmasq hook only acted on 'add'/'del'. A re-image comes back to the
existing lease, which dnsmasq reports as 'old', and only when the
hostname/MAC changed. Now dnsmasq sets script-on-renewal, and the hook
clears state on 'old' when the request comes from PXE firmware or iPXE
(vendor class PXEClient), i.e. the machine just network-booted. A
Windows lease renewal (MSFT 5.0) is left alone.
- The 1 h conntrack timeout never applied after a reboot: systemd-sysctl
runs before ufw loads nf_conntrack, so the keys did not exist and the
5-day default stayed. /etc/modules-load.d/pxe-conntrack.conf loads it
first.
- smb-soft-reset.sh flushed neighbours on br-pxe, which no longer exists.
Live 2026-10-14. Hook tested on the server with an unused IP: network-boot
renewal clears, Windows renewal and no vendor class do not, add clears.
pxe-nic-check classifies each NIC from what it hears: LLDP/CDP/802.1X
from managed switches, foreign DHCP offers and their domain (one
DHCPDISCOVER on the imaging NIC; the GE NIC's networkd lease is read
instead), STP and ARP hosts for information. A kernel BPF filter keeps
bulk SMB traffic out of the capture loop; bridge ports are listened on
too, since LLDP and EAPOL stop at the port.
- dnsmasq drop-in runs --guard as ExecStartPre: exit 1 on a ge or
foreign-dhcp imaging verdict, fail open (loudly) on bugs or no link
- pxe-nic-check.timer runs --watch every 5 min: stops dnsmasq on a bad
imaging verdict, never starts it
- /run/pxe-nic-status.json (0644, atomic) for the webapp
- playbook installs it all and writes /etc/pxe-server/nic.conf from
pxe_imaging_mac, pxe_ge_mac, pxe_corp_domain_suffixes,
pxe_nic_allowed_switches
- unit tests plus a no-root network-namespace lab (veth pairs, a raw
socket DHCP/LLDP peer and real dnsmasq); docs/pxe-nic-guard.md has the
operator notes and the two floor tests
Live since 2026-10-14 for every client (all UEFI clients now run iPXE 2.0):
- WinPE skips the 'Secure Boot must be ENABLED' warning and its 5 s wait
when iPXE reads Secure Boot as on (${efi/SecureBoot:uint8}); otherwise,
or on an iPXE that cannot read it, it warns as before.
- Blancco and Blancco debug start through Ubuntu's shim (iPXE shim
command), so they run with Secure Boot on; an iPXE without the command
boots the kernel directly as before. The separate Secure Boot TEST entry
is gone.
- Blancco has its own menu section; only Clonezilla and Memtest stay under
'Secure Boot must be DISABLED'.
The playbook now installs playbook/ipxe/GetPxeScript.aspx instead of an
inline copy that had drifted from the live menu. Checked that the Blancco
Releases page still parses it (one item blancco, :blancco_efi block).
Live since 2026-10-14: dnsmasq hands every UEFI client ipxe-shim.efi
(iPXE's shim, dual-signed under Microsoft UEFI CA 2011 + 2023), which
loads ipxe.efi from the TFTP root, now the iPXE v2.0.0 snponly build
(firmware network and USB drivers; the full build kills USB keyboards).
The per-MAC test tags and folders are gone; the old Broadcom-signed
1.21.1 build stays as ipxe-bcm.efi, the rollback.
- playbook: pinned sha256 vars, the new dnsmasq default line, and a
verified, non-optional task that installs ipxe-shim.efi, ipxe.efi
(snponly), ipxe.pxe and ipxe-bcm.efi (was: copy ipxe.efi and the never
served undionly.kpxe, errors ignored).
- scripts/fetch-ipxe.sh downloads the pinned tarball and shim into
boot-files/ for the USB build; README/SETUP list the step.
- iPXE page: ipxe.efi is staged from snponly.efi, a build that drives USB
itself is refused, and the snponly-shim/snponly root files are gone.
Tested: the playbook task against the real release files (installs the
live hashes; a tampered file stops it before anything is replaced),
ansible --syntax-check, staging, and the full-build refusal.
sbsigntool, zip and curl, the Zscaler root CA in the system store (GitHub is
TLS-intercepted on the corporate NIC; downloads.dell.com is not), and
/var/lib/pxe-webapp/updates.
The hardware report went out from winpe-status-push.ps1 on the
enrollment share (Y:), but startnet.cmd never maps Y: on the
gea-standard / gea-engineer path (choices 1/2 go purpose -> tenant ->
enroll_staged), so those builds never reported. The same gap means
neither the status push nor preflight.ps1's driver check has ever run
for standard/engineer images.
The BIOS share is mapped by every WinPE boot before the menu, and
check-bios.cmd lives on it, so it now calls hardware-report.ps1 from
the same folder (best effort, output discarded). winpe-status-push.ps1
goes back to status only, so shopfloor bays are not counted twice. The
playbook deploys hardware-report.ps1 with the other BIOS files.
Automates the Blancco parts of the onsite-support CMMC playbook:
- ENT-056/158 evidence pack: /reports/evidence?month=YYYY-MM returns
ENT-056_<Site>_<YYYY-MM>.zip (summary.csv, README, each report's XML
and PDF). pxe-blancco-evidence.timer saves last month's pack to the
reports share's evidence/ folder on the 1st (Persistent).
- ENT-045/159 ServiceNow tick list: /reports/servicenow lists recent
reports as "Wiped" or "Blancco Wipe failed" with a pre-written
destruction note, copy buttons and Done (CSRF-protected).
- Cloud upload: blancco-progress.py posts each report's upload result
("Sending report document id" -> "Report sent to MC") to
/reports/cloud-status (CSRF-exempt like /imaging/status); the Reports
page and the CSVs show it, so a wipe missing from BMP is visible.
- CSV gains failure_reason (exception messages, failed steps, error
counts), business_location and cloud_upload.
- Preferences: business_location "West Jefferson" (config.BLANCCO_SITE)
and pdf+xml reports; the report copier now copies the PDF too, named
after its XML. .part and hidden files are not listed as reports.
State (cloud confirmations, ServiceNow ticks) is a JSON file at
/var/lib/pxe-webapp/blancco-state.json, off the report share.
Each Blancco PC now gets a tile on /imaging, keyed by BIOS serial with
pctype "blancco", using the /imaging/status endpoint the WinPE clients
already post to (stage_total 7):
1 Downloading Blancco, 2 Starting Blancco (blancco-init.sh, wget)
3 Waiting for licence / Licence OK (N left)
4 Erasing: step N - <step> [NN%]
5 Erasure finished / Report saved
6 Report sent to cloud
7 Done (succeeded), or Erasure FAILED (failed, sticks)
playbook/blancco-progress.py follows the AlbusSeven journal inside the
Blancco rootfs and maps its lines to those stages; patterns taken from
a real 7.20 auto-mode run and replayed with --replay/--dry-run, plus a
synthetic failed step. Init fetches it from the web root at boot and
installs it as blancco-progress.service; the playbook deploys it there.
The report copier adds a "Report copied to share" log line. Stage 1
resets a finished tile for the same serial. All posts are best effort.
The UEFI loader ran under set -x and printed modprobe -v, ip link and
ip addr, and neither kernel cmdline had quiet, so the screen scrolled
hundreds of lines before the Blancco GUI. Now:
- quiet loglevel=3 on both Blancco kernel lines (also quiets systemd)
- init clears the screen and prints one line per step
- blancco.debug=1 on the cmdline restores the old trace
- failure paths still print their diagnostics and drop to a shell
Live GetPxeScript.aspx changed to match (backup
.bak-20261005-pre-quiet) and kexec-initrd.img rebuilt.
The UEFI Blancco path boots the Ubuntu 6.8 kernel on Blancco's rootfs, so
iwlwifi loads firmware from the Blancco image. 7.20 dropped the API 86
ucode for AX201/AX210/AX211 and ships only API 89, which the 6.8 driver
cannot use: WiFi never came up, so no cloud licence (seen 2026-10-05).
kmod.tar.gz now also carries the host's lib/firmware/iwlwifi-* (183
files, .zst, which the kernel prefers over the image's .xz). Files only:
on the Blancco rootfs lib is a symlink to usr/lib. Live tarball rebuilt
(backup kmod.tar.gz.bak-20261005-pre-iwlfw); the task's creates: guard
means an existing server needs the file removed to pick this up.
The kexec-initrd build copied a fixed set of module directories plus
drivers/net/mii.ko. Ubuntu ships that as mii.ko.zst, so the -e test
skipped it, and usbnet, r8152 and cdc_ether then failed to load with
"Unknown symbol mii_*": USB-C to RJ45 adapters never appeared (seen
2026-10-05, Dell USB-C adapter). igb lacked dca and i2c-algo-bit the
same way.
Walk the host modules.dep from the copied modules and copy every
dependency (73 on 6.8.0-71). Also copy rtl_nic, tigon, bnx2, bnx2x and
e100 firmware, which those drivers request at probe.
7.20 licenses through the Blancco cloud, and on the air-gapped PXE LAN
the only route out is WiFi INTERNETACCESS. The legacy BIOS cmdline still
blacklisted iwlwifi/iwlmvm, so BIOS boots could never license. btusb
stays blacklisted; rd.udev.timeout=10 bounds the udev hang iwlwifi
caused on some Intel machines. Live GetPxeScript.aspx changed to match
(backup .bak-20261005-pre-bios-wifi).
Zscaler: Install-Zscaler.ps1 ships in all three MCL packages with
Zscaler-windows-4.7.0.317-installer-x64.msi bundled. It is tenant-aware
(geaerospace.com for GCCH, geaerospaceglobal.com for RoW, gegovdev.us for QA)
and passes enableFips=1.
Our FirstLogonCommands entry installed 4.5.0.337, two minor versions older,
without enableFips, and with userDomain hardcoded to geaerospace.com - wrong
for a RoW bay, which startnet's tenant sub-menu can produce. Two msiexec runs
against the same product at one logon also risk 1618. Removed, same reasoning
as Office.
THE BIGGER FIND, while removing it: this repo template was badly out of date
with the share, and the playbook deploys it with force: yes.
Missing here but present live: specialize Orders 39-48 - the bulk-enrollment
orchestrator registration (Order 39, Register-BulkEnrollTask-Standard.ps1), the
Default User startup-delay and Start-menu tweaks, the two NoAutoUpdate keys,
the 'vanilla' Shift+F10 fallback alias, and the removable-media block that stops
the PPKG being auto-detected at OOBE. Also missing: FirstLogonCommands Orders
4-10 (wuauserv disable, Default User hive edits, removable-media unblock).
A playbook run would therefore have stripped enrollment from every gea-standard
and gea-engineer bay. Both templates are now reconciled against the live share.
Engineer gets its own template. The two files differ only by FirstLogonCommands
Order 11, which installs the Engineering Layer - so deploying one shared file to
both, as the playbook did, silently removed that entry from gea-engineer on
every run. Split into FlatUnattendW10.xml and FlatUnattendW10-engineer.xml with
an explicit per-type loop.
lint-unattend.py passes clean on all three live files and all three repo copies.
download-drivers.py rsyncs driver packs into _shared/Out-of-box Drivers over ssh as the pxe user, but the store was created root:root so new model folders failed with Permission denied. Added a task to own the store pxe:pxe 0775 (root and the webapp still write it fine). Fixed live on 172.16.9.1 too (chown -R).
The live PXE server carried working config the playbook would have clobbered on re-run. Committed back:
- dnsmasq: BIOS boot chain now the vendorclass PXEClient:Arch:00000 -> ipxe.pxe scheme (plus iPXE userclass HTTP chain), replacing the stale undionly.kpxe client-arch=0 scheme (undionly.kpxe was never staged in tftp-root). Bind by listen-address=172.16.9.1 + bind-dynamic instead of interface=+bind-interfaces.
- samba: add 'allow insecure wide links = yes' to the managed symlinks block (modern Samba silently disables wide links without it) and the [winpeapps_bios] read-only share.
- blancco iPXE menu: full BIOS/EFI arch split (direct-kernel vmlinuz-bde-linux / vmlinuz-ubuntu with ucode+kexec initrds) with a GRUB chain fallback, replacing the old single-line 'chain grubx64.efi'.
startnet.cmd was NOT a commit-back: repo is already ahead of the live boot.wim (deploy-pending).
Drop ge-standard/ge-engineer/ge-shopfloor-lockdown/ge-shopfloor-mce from image_types + standard_types, both startnet boot menus (choices + labels + net use), and the webapp IMAGE_TYPES/FRIENDLY_NAMES. Fleet is gea-* only; the empty ge-* winpeapps stub dirs were removed on the live share.
The shopfloor unattend deploy used force:no, so once a live copy existed the
playbook never overwrote it. That let the live gea-shopfloor unattend drift for
weeks - missing the Fetch + Verify-And-Heal staging steps - which is why imaging
lost payloads (CMM bundle/backups). Flip to force:yes so the repo stays the
source of truth, matching the standard/engineer unattend task.

WinPE maps the enrollment share early, then idles for minutes while the WIM
applies. deadtime=5 dropped that idle session, so the post-apply staging
copies failed (bay left with only site-config.json staged). VM test against
the live share copied everything fine on a fresh mount; the only difference
was the idle. deadtime=0 disables idle auto-disconnect. Applied live to the
current box (smbd reloaded); this makes it permanent + covers the second box
on the next playbook run.

Single-site bay-stuck issue at WJ: GE Intune Report IP script filters
Get-NetIPAddress on StartsWith("10.") and posts everything matching
to the GE Tines webhook. Bays at WJ get the PXE LAN 10.9.100.x IP
captured and reported -> GE backend tags bays as on a non-corp 10.x
subnet -> dynamic group eligibility for SFLD policy never matches.
Other GE sites work because their PXE LANs aren't on 10.x at all.
Renumber PXE LAN to RFC1918 172.16.9.0/24 so the GE filter naturally
skips wired PXE addresses without any disable-NIC dance.
Server-side already in flight (netplan dual-bound, dnsmasq scope +
boot URL repointed, blancco preferences + grub.cfg + iPXE GetPxeScript
all sed'd to 172.16.9.1). This commit is the playbook / scripts /
docs side: 109 hits across 35 files sed'd in one shot.
After this lands + boot.wim is rebuilt + bays renumber off DHCP,
the 10.9.100.1 binding will be dropped from netplan as the final
cleanup step.

The inline one-liner in startnet.cmd called Get-NetAdapter, which is
not available in WinPE's stripped PowerShell (no NetTCPIP module).
Errors silently swallowed by the surrounding try/catch - POST never
fired, dashboard never showed bays during the WIM-apply phase.
Externalize to a standalone .ps1 on the enrollment share:
* Uses wmic (always present in WinPE 10+) for both serial AND mac
instead of Get-CimInstance / Get-NetAdapter.
* Logs every step to X:\Windows\Temp\winpe-status-push.log so a
future "POST didn't fire" debug is one file read away.
* startnet.cmd now just runs powershell -File Y:\scripts\winpe-status-
push.ps1. Future edits to the push logic do NOT require a boot.wim
rebuild; just edit the .ps1 on the share.
Mirror the existing pattern for run-enrollment.ps1 / wait-for-internet.ps1
/ migrate-to-wifi.ps1 (all already at /srv/samba/enrollment/scripts/).
Add the new file to the playbook's enrollment-scripts copy loop.

End-to-end fixes for Blancco Drive Eraser PXE flow uncovered by chasing
"reports never reach SMB share" across two air-gapped sites:
playbook/blancco-init.sh:
* Drop silent || true on wget of preferences.xml + config.xml. Fail
loud with shell-drop if download or marker grep fails. Background:
airootfs /opt/scripts/validate_preferences.sh restores
/albus/preferences.save (factory defaults, empty network_share) if
xmllint fails. wget failure made every report silently land nowhere.
* Clobber /albus/preferences.save with the same served file so even if
the validator fallback fires, the SMB target survives.
* Bind-mount /dev/null over /sys/power/{state,disk,mem_sleep,autosleep}
before switch_root. Albus's license-retry path writes /sys/power/state
directly (bypassing systemd targets); this is the last-line block.
* /dev/null symlinks for sleep/suspend/hibernate systemd targets in the
airootfs overlay + logind drop-in with IdleAction/Handle*=ignore.
Three independent layers because cmdline systemd.mask alone is bypassed
by direct /sys/power/state writes.
* xinitrc.d/00-no-screen-blank.sh runs xset s off -dpms + setterm
-blank 0 -powerdown 0 so the Blancco GUI doesn't blank during long
erasures.
* Removed the 20-failsafeDriver.conf "modesetting" pin. modesetting
needs DRM/KMS which we disable on kernel cmdline; "vesa" also failed
on NVIDIA. With the pin gone Xorg auto-picks fbdev which uses the
kernel framebuffer from vga=normal - works across Intel, AMD, and
older NVIDIA without nouveau.
playbook/pxe_server_setup.yml:
* dnsmasq.conf: explicit empty-value dhcp-option=3 + dhcp-option=6.
Without them, dnsmasq defaults to sending its own IP as router AND
DNS. Commenting the configured-value lines did NOT disable the push
(root cause of "wired keeps picking up 10.9.100.1 as gateway").
* Split the Blancco config.img extraction and preferences.xml deploy
into separate tasks. The previous shell-with-creates: gate caused
playbook re-runs to skip the prefs deploy entirely after first run.
* Added a validation task that runs python3 xml parse + grep on the
deployed preferences.xml to fail the playbook at deploy time if the
SMB markers are missing.
* Added Environment=TZ=America/New_York to the pxe-webapp systemd
service so report mtimes and audit log render in Eastern time even
if the Python process is started before timedatectl converges.
webapp:
* services/blancco_report.py: parse Blancco's XML report format
(recursive <entries name="..."> walker) into a friendly dict.
* templates/report_view.html: Bootstrap "Drive Erasure Certificate"
layout - hero summary, customer + system cards, per-drive cards with
step-by-step erasure timeline, document signing footer with
integrity hash detail.
* /reports/view/<filename> route + View button on the reports list
(XML reports only; PDFs still download).

Legacy-BIOS PXE clients booting Blancco reported "NBP is too big to
fit in free base memory". Cause: dnsmasq unconditionally served
ipxe.efi (~675KB EFI binary) which legacy BIOS PXE ROMs cannot
execute and which exceeds their NBP cap.
Fix:
- Add undionly.kpxe (~70KB BIOS-mode iPXE, from boot.ipxe.org).
- dnsmasq: dhcp-match on option:client-arch,0 (BIOS) -> undionly.kpxe;
default (everything else, including UEFI x86_64 arch 7 and 9) keeps
getting ipxe.efi. Tag form is reversible: if the match fails to
evaluate, fallback is the working EFI path, not the new binary.
- Ansible TFTP-copy loop: mirror undionly.kpxe alongside ipxe.efi.
- .gitignore exception: track the open-source kpxe binary so the
air-gapped USB build stays self-contained.
UEFI clients unchanged. Blancco/Clonezilla/WinPE chain after the
iPXE menu is identical regardless of which iPXE variant delivered it.

The "Configure static IP for PXE interface" task writes a flat
single-NIC netplan config. Live PXE server (10.9.100.1) overrides
this with a bridge config bonding the USB-C 5 Gbps NIC and the
onboard NIC into br-pxe, because the onboard NIC alone cannot
sustain the imaging throughput required by the floor.
Add a comment block above the task warning that re-running it on
a box already using the bridge config will replace the bridge with
a flat single-iface config and likely break the PXE LAN. The full
bridge YAML is included for reference. Recovery is via
/etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml.pre-gold-swap (preserved by netplan
backup).

Bundles drift left uncommitted from prior sessions and the UDC matrix
verify entry added today.
Drift items (all per session-progress.md, completed in earlier sessions
but never staged):
- playbook/check-bios.cmd (deleted, moved to BIOS/check-bios.cmd)
- playbook/migrate-to-wifi.ps1 (made no-op 2026-04-24 after the dnsmasq
no-gateway fix removed the wired-NIC race that motivated it)
- playbook/preinstall/oracle/Install-Oracle11r2.cmd (post-OUI .ora copy
added 2026-04-24)
- playbook/preinstall/oracle/tnsnames.ora (live tnsnames, 469 KB,
deployed alongside the wrapper 2026-04-24)
- playbook/pxe_server_setup.yml (dnsmasq dhcp-option=3,6 commented,
Oracle .ora deploy task added 2026-04-24)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/BIOS/{check-bios.cmd, models.txt} (BIOS
detection refinements)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/Force-Lockdown.bat
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/Monitor-IntuneProgress.ps1
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/SetShopfloorAutoLogon.bat (new)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/09-Install-PrinterInstallerMap.ps1
(new, places PrinterInstallerMap.exe + Public Desktop shortcut at
imaging time; manifest entry self-heals on tamper)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/lib/Show-IntuneDeviceQR.ps1 (new,
standalone QR rendering for site that wanted just that piece)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/gea-shopfloor-collections/{Install-eMxInfo.cmd.template,
Restore-UDCData.ps1} (these were uncommitted in pre-rename Standard/;
git mv didn't catch them because they were untracked at the time)
- docs/shopfloor-machine-imaging-guide.md (operator-facing how-to)
Matrix:
- common.test/matrix.json: add UDC verify entry to gea-shopfloor-collections
row. Surfaces UDC silent-install issue (item H pending) instead of
letting it pass silently.
.gitignore:
- PrinterInstallerMap.exe (142 MB) excluded. Track via LFS or stage on
PXE server only - too big for regular git history. Untouched on disk
so existing local copy still works.

Companion to the previous commit (4550d43). Three files that should have
been in the same commit but got left out of `git add`:
- .gitignore: negate rule for boot-tools/blancco/grub-blancco.cfg so the
tracked cfg (source of truth for grubx64.efi rebuilds) survives
the blanket boot-tools/ ignore.
- playbook/blancco-init.sh: rewritten for modprobe-with-deps, full NIC
driver coverage, set -x trace to /dev/console, dmesg + PCI-device +
/proc/modules dump + interactive shell on "no NIC after 60s".
Replaces the narrow insmod-loop version that silently hung on
unsupported NICs.
- playbook/pxe_server_setup.yml "Build Blancco PXE initramfs" task now
sweeps the full drivers/net/ tree (ethernet + phy + mdio + usb + fddi
+ wan) plus overlay / squashfs / loop / ptp / libphy / mii deps, runs
depmod to regenerate modules.dep inside the initramfs (required for
modprobe dependency resolution), and symlinks the full applet list
blancco-init.sh needs (modprobe, insmod, dmesg, find, env, etc).
Result: ~20 MB initramfs vs the old 2 MB narrow build.

1. Deploy gea-standard / gea-engineer FlatUnattendW10.xml
The playbook only copied the shopfloor variant before; standard and
engineer's unattend was hand-staged on the running servers. New task
loops the repo's playbook/FlatUnattendW10.xml into Deploy/ for each
entry in standard_types (new var covering gea-standard, gea-engineer,
ge-standard, ge-engineer). force: yes because repo drift vs deployed
copy is what produced the Win10/Win11 search-cleanup regression
earlier this session (d49f516).
2. Deploy Oracle Client 11.2 preinstall payload
preinstall.json now leads with Oracle 11.2 (commit 3a29784). The CMD
wrapper is tracked in the repo at playbook/preinstall/oracle/; the
686 MB Oracle_OracleDatabase_11r2_V03.zip is too large to commit and
rides on USB under oracle/ alongside BIOS exes. Three tasks:
mkdir staging dir, copy CMD from usb_mount, copy zip from usb_root
with a soft-fail + warning if absent.
3. No change needed for sync-preinstall.sh — Oracle 10.2.0.3 flat
installer was already dropped in 9235d19.
YAML lints clean. Fresh server built from this commit will bring up
Blancco-agnostic imaging paths correctly; Blancco-specific gaps
(grubx64.efi native-vs-slim, narrow kexec-initrd driver tree,
narrow blancco-init.sh) are still deferred per earlier "option B"
decision and remain server-side-pinned only.

User reports Blancco was working before our mirror/session activity
today - then my attempted fixes (grubx64.efi rebuild, kexec-initrd
driver sweep, verbose blancco-init.sh) made it worse:
- First attempt (narrow igc driver add) did not help because the
switch-root path was not the one actually loaded by grubx64.efi's
embedded config.
- Second attempt (swapped grub embedded config to Ubuntu-kernel path)
got further, but then kexec-initrd modules failed on insmod.
- Third attempt (full ethernet tree sweep) pulled in broken ancient
drivers (winbond-840, w5100-spi, xirc2ps_cs) that failed with
unknown-symbol errors and prevented good drivers from loading.
Full revert: .gitignore, blancco-init.sh, pxe_server_setup.yml back to
the pre-session commit 6dcf832 state. Removes boot-tools/blancco/grub-
blancco.cfg from git (it was only added this session).
Runtime on both PXE servers was also restored: grubx64.efi and
kexec-initrd.img reverted from the .bak files taken before each
modification this session.
Whatever was there before today is now restored byte-for-byte on both
servers. If there is still a Blancco boot issue on specific modern
hardware that the user needs to fix, we will diagnose that narrowly
against the actual failure mode on that specific machine, not by
making sweeping preemptive changes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Previous approach listed ~6 specific drivers (e1000e, igb, tg3, bnx2,
bnxt_en, b44) and silenced insmod errors (2>/dev/null). On modern Dell
fleet (Latitude 5330/5440, Pro-series, newer OptiPlex) this missed
igc (Intel I225/I226) entirely, and for the drivers we did include,
dependency modules they need at insmod time (libeth, libie, dca,
i2c-algo-bit, macsec, mii, libphy, ptp, ...) were never bundled.
insmod does not resolve dependencies, so NIC drivers that need
helpers failed to load silently.
playbook/pxe_server_setup.yml (kexec-initrd build):
- Sweep the whole drivers/net/ethernet tree (~170 drivers, all
vendors, ~15 MB total). Drivers for hardware not present skip
without binding.
- Add common helper dirs: drivers/net/{phy,mdio}, drivers/i2c/algos,
drivers/dca, drivers/ptp, net/macsec, drivers/ssb.
- overlay.ko kept.
playbook/blancco-init.sh:
- Load helpers BEFORE main NIC drivers (libeth/libie, dca,
i2c-algo-bit, macsec, mii, ssb, libphy, mdio*, phy*, ptp*),
then iterate remaining modules.
- Remove 2>/dev/null on insmod so actual failures surface on the
boot console.
- Print kernel version + /sys/class/net before/after driver load,
plus dmesg grep for NIC driver activity.
- On "no interface found" failure, dump dmesg tail and drop to a
busybox shell for manual debug rather than just hanging.
Separate from this commit but related: kexec-initrd.img on both PXE
servers (.1 and .2) was rebuilt inline with these changes. Pre-rebuild
binary kept as kexec-initrd.img.bak-<timestamp>.

Three changes that go together so a re-image never hits "System error 53":
1. dnsmasq dhcp-script hook (playbook/pxe-server-helpers/pxe-dhcp-hook.sh)
Fires on every add/del lease event. Runs conntrack -D and ss -K for the
client IP so any stale ESTABLISHED SMB session from a previous boot is
cleared before the client reconnects. Runs as root (dnsmasq default).
Wired into /etc/dnsmasq.conf via dhcp-script= directive in the playbook.
2. One-source PPKG (playbook/startnet.cmd + startnet-template.cmd)
The 5 per-Office PPKG copies were bit-for-bit identical; only the
filename differs because BPRT parses Office and Region out of the name.
Store one source file (e.g. GCCH_Prod_SFLD_v4.11.ppkg) and construct
the BPRT-tagged target filename at menu-selection time from variables:
SOURCE_PPKG / PPKG_VER / PPKG_EXP / REGION / OFFICE
copy /Y "Y:\ppkgs\%SOURCE_PPKG%" "W:\Enrollment\%PPKG%"
Bumped PPKG_VER v4.10 -> v4.11 and PPKG_EXP 20260430 -> 20270430.
Saves ~30G on disk per version.
3. run-enrollment.ps1 already committed in 5a9c3db uses provtool.exe
directly (no PowerShell cmdlet 180s timeout). Included here because it
is part of the same end-to-end PPKG path.
Workstation reorganization:
- All build/deploy/helper scripts moved into scripts/ (paths updated to use
REPO_ROOT instead of SCRIPT_DIR so they resolve sibling dirs from the new
depth)
- New config/ directory placeholder for site-specific overrides
- Removed stale: mok-keys/, test-vm.sh, test-lab.sh, setup-guide-original.txt,
unattend/ (duplicate of moved playbook/FlatUnattendW10.xml)
- README.md and SETUP.md structure listings updated, dead "Testing with KVM"
section removed
- .claude/ gitignored
Enrollment share internal taxonomy (forward-looking; existing servers
unaffected since they keep their current boot.wim with flat paths):
- Single SMB share kept (WinPE only mounts one Y: drive), but content now
organised into ppkgs/, scripts/, config/, shopfloor-setup/, pre-install/{bios,
installers}, installers-post/cmm/, blancco/, logs/
- README.md deployed to share root explaining each subdir
- New playbook tasks deploy site-config.json + wait-for-internet.ps1 +
migrate-to-wifi.ps1 explicitly (were ad-hoc on legacy servers)
- BIOS subdir moved into pre-install/bios/, preinstall/ renamed to pre-install/
- startnet.cmd + startnet-template.cmd updated with new Y:\subdir\ paths
- Bumped GCCH PPKG references v4.9 -> v4.10
Blancco USB-build fixes (so next fresh USB install boots Blancco end-to-end
without the manual fixup we did against GOLD):
- grub-blancco.cfg: kernel/initrd switched HTTP -> TFTP (GRUB's HTTP module
times out on multi-MB files); added modprobe.blacklist=iwlwifi, iwlmvm, btusb
(WiFi drivers hang udev on Intel business PCs)
- grubx64.efi rebuilt from updated cfg
- Playbook task added to create /srv/tftp/blancco/ symlinks pointing at the
HTTP-served binaries
run-enrollment.ps1: OOBEComplete is now set AFTER PPKG install (Win11 22H2+
hangs indefinitely if OOBEComplete is set before the bulk-enrollment PPKG runs).
Also includes deploy-bios.sh / pull-bios.sh / busybox-static / models.txt
that were sitting untracked at the repo root.
- autoinstall/user-data: move lvextend/growpart/pvresize BEFORE playbook
so 130GB of drivers+PPKGs fits during first-boot copy. Use
tr -d "[:space:]" to avoid breaking outer bash -c single-quote wrap.
- playbook: add executable: /bin/bash to Dell driver deploy (process
substitution) and Blancco initramfs builder (brace expansion).
- playbook: make "Ensure Samba user for Blancco reports" idempotent via
pdbedit check so re-runs don't abort the play.
- download-packages.sh: also download dist-upgrade package set. Explicit
--simulate misses transitive version bumps (e.g. gnupg 17.4 needs
matching gpgv 17.4) causing offline dpkg "dependency problems" when
ISO baseline is older than noble-updates.
- PreInstall runner reads pc-subtype.txt and matches PCTypes against
both base type (Standard) and composite key (Standard-Machine).
- UDC scoped to Standard-Machine only. eDNC and MachineNumberACLs
skip on Standard-Timeclock sub-type.
- Lab added to OpenText PCTypes.
- build-usb.sh copies enrollment/ (PPKGs) and drivers-staging/ (Dell
driver packs) onto USB for self-contained deployment.
- Playbook deploys PPKGs and drivers from USB to PXE server shares.
- Gitignore enrollment/, drivers-staging/, *.ppkg (large binaries).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Monitor-IntuneProgress: Display PCs skip DSC phases entirely (no SAS
token, no DSCInstall.log), complete after Phase 1 identity. Renderer
hides Phase 2-5 for Display type.
- Playbook: deploy PPKG files and run-enrollment.ps1 from USB to
enrollment share. Bump dnsmasq restart cron from 15s to 30s.
- build-usb.sh: copy enrollment/ directory (PPKGs) onto USB if present.
- user-data: add dpkg --configure -a after offline .deb install to fix
packages left in unconfigured state (cron, systemd-timesyncd).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
WinPE clients re-imaging the same machine hit "System error 53 -
network path not found" on the second attempt. systemctl restart smbd
did not help; only a full server power cycle cleared the state.
Root cause is kernel nf_conntrack: the default TCP ESTABLISHED timeout
is 5 days (432000s), so a session from the first WinPE run whose
client rebooted abnormally leaves an ASSURED ESTABLISHED entry that
ufw's state-tracking rules then mis-classify the new SYN against.
Fix applied in three layers:
- /etc/sysctl.d/99-pxe-conntrack.conf drops TCP ESTABLISHED timeout
to 1 hour and shortens the half-closed states to 30s each.
- smb.conf gains socket options TCP_NODELAY SO_KEEPALIVE IPTOS_LOWDELAY
plus keepalive = 30 and deadtime = 5. Active sessions refresh the
conntrack timer every 30s via keepalives so they never age out;
dead ones expire in an hour.
- /usr/local/sbin/smb-diag.sh snapshots kernel + Samba state for
remote diagnosis; /usr/local/sbin/smb-soft-reset.sh walks a
progressive recovery (nmbd/smbd restart, conntrack flush, arp
flush, ss -K) as an alternative to power-cycling.
conntrack package added to download-packages.sh and playbook verify
list so the offline .deb bundle ships with it.

Adds a local-install pipeline so Standard shopfloor PCs get Oracle, the
VC++ redists (2008-2022), and UDC installed during PXE imaging via Samba
instead of pulling ~215 MB per device from Azure blob over the corporate
WAN. Intune DSC then verifies (already-installed apps are skipped) and
the only Azure traffic on the happy path is ~11 KB of CustomScripts
wrapper polling.
New files:
- playbook/preinstall/preinstall.json — curated app list with PCTypes
filter and per-app detection rules. Install order puts VC++ 2008
LAST so its (formerly) reboot-triggering bootstrapper doesn't kill
the runner mid-loop. (2008 itself now uses extracted vc_red.msi with
REBOOT=ReallySuppress; the reorder is defense in depth.)
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Shopfloor/00-PreInstall-MachineApps.ps1 —
the runner. Numbered 00- so it runs first in the baseline sequence.
Reads preinstall.json, filters by PCTYPE, polls for completion via
detection check (handles UDC's hung WPF process by killing it once
detection passes), uses synchronous WriteThrough logging that
survives hard reboots, preserves log history across runs.
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Standard/Set-MachineNumber.{ps1,bat} — desktop
helper for SupportUser. Reads current UDC + eDNC machine numbers,
prompts via VB InputBox, validates digits-only, kills running UDC,
edits both C:\ProgramData\UDC\udc_settings.json and HKLM\…\GE Aircraft
Engines\DNC\General\MachineNo, relaunches UDC. Lets a tech assign a
real machine number to a mass-produced PC without admin/LAPS.
- playbook/sync-preinstall.sh — workstation helper to push installer
binaries from /home/camp/pxe-images/main/ to the live PXE Samba.
Changes:
- playbook/startnet.cmd + startnet-template.cmd — add xcopy to stage
preinstall bundle from Y:\preinstall\ to W:\PreInstall\ during the
WinPE imaging phase, gated on PCTYPE being set.
- playbook/pxe_server_setup.yml — create /srv/samba/enrollment/preinstall
+ installers/ directories and deploy preinstall.json there.
- playbook/shopfloor-setup/Run-ShopfloorSetup.ps1 — bump AutoLogonCount
to 99 at start (defense against any installer triggering an immediate
reboot mid-dispatcher; final line still resets to 2 on successful
completion). Copy Set-MachineNumber.{ps1,bat} to SupportUser desktop
on Standard PCs.

Ansible cron module writes to root's crontab which requires cron
daemon running. Drop file in /etc/cron.d/ instead for reliability.
